About the Rundle Lantern Launched on 24 October, 2008, the Rundle Lantern is a major initiative of Adelaide City Council, and is located on the Rundle Street UPark at the corner of Pulteney and Rundle Streets in the City's East End. Best viewed from Adelaide’s iconic Rundle Mall, the Lantern's unique designs are driven by computer software that showcase colourful and dynamic moving imagery and digital art works by night and creates a contemporary architectural experience during the day. The Lantern serves as a major City attraction and relies on the continual development and display of exciting new content. It provides partnership opportunities with artists in the local community, and festival/event organisers in the City. Operating Times 6.30pm – 2.30am Solar Energy The Rundle Lantern is 100% green-powered and the light show is carbon neutral. The Lantern's LEDs use less energy than conventional incandescent bulbs and the lifespan of an LED lamp is 100 times that of a conventional bulb. The panels are installed at an angle to allow 50% air flow throughout the floors of the UPark for ventilation. Technical Specifications The Lantern is nine levels high, at 1,066 square metres (covering almost 40% of the building). It is made up of 748 square panels which are activated by an LED (light emitting diode) system. Rundle Lantern Launch from Fusion on Vimeo. |
Art: An artists’ guide to the Rundle Lantern by danimations on Feb.04, 2009
The Rundle Lantern in action While the screen itself can display video content, don’t get to thinking Time Square, New York, or downtown Tokyo. Despite its gargantuan scale, the screen is actually incredibly low resolution, and is made up of a grid of metal panels, each illuminated by white LEDs. Capable of tinting the metal panels across the full spectrum of hues, the LEDs can apply two pixels of colour (left and right sides) per panel. The grid is 34 illuminated panels wide, and twenty one high, with the screen extending along the building’s two most prominent sides. As the picture demonstrates, It wraps around the carpark’s corner, to create a unique and memorable facade. When the sun goes down each night, the fun begins.
